🥃 Our First Kentucky Bourbon Trail Adventure

Distilleries, Golf, Hidden Gems & Can’t-Miss Experiences

There are trips you plan… and then there are trips that turn into something even better.

Our first journey along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail did exactly that—blending iconic distilleries, unforgettable meals, great golf, and the kind of moments you can’t script.

This one started with our friends Joe and Jen, who coordinated the entire trip—and what they put together was something special. What began as a getaway with them quickly turned into new friendships, shared experiences, and a trip we’ll be talking about for a long time.

Because as we’ve learned…
it’s not just about where you go—it’s how you experience it.

🗺️ Our Bourbon Trail Itinerary (Day-by-Day)

📍 Day 1: Arrival, Settling In & A Strong Start

We arrived, got settled into our VRBO, and immediately knew we had picked the right home base—comfortable, spacious, and perfectly located for everything ahead.

That first night, we met up at Noche—a unique Mexican restaurant set inside a beautifully renovated church.

The concept?
👉 Mexican flavors meet West Texas BBQ

The vibe?
👉 Equal parts cool, cozy, and unexpected

Pro tip: Get the brisket. No questions asked.

From there, it was all about reconnecting with our friends Joe and Jen, meeting new friends, and kicking off what would become an unforgettable adventure.

📍 Day 2: Bourbon Trail Begins + KBB Experience

We spent the day with Kentucky Bourbon Boys (KBB) Tours, and this truly elevated the entire experience.

Private transportation ✔️
Seamless logistics ✔️
And our guide, Roger—knowledgeable, accommodating, and by the end of the day… one of the group.

🥃 Limestone Branch Distillery

A smaller, more intimate distillery that gave us a great introduction—personal, historic, and rich in craftsmanship.

🥃 Maker’s Mark Distillery (Lunch + Bottle Dipping)

An iconic stop that delivered on every level.

👉 Grounds curated by Margie Samuels
👉 Labels printed on a 1935 Chandler & Price press
👉 Rickhouse filled with the aroma of the “angel’s share” (evaporated product from the barrels)

And yes… we dipped our own bottles in the signature red wax.  Yes, it was cool.

🥃 Willett Distillery

Boutique, family-owned, and detail-driven.

👉 And yes… the egg salad sandwich lives up to the hype.  The sandwich has it’s own Facebook page!

🥃 Heaven Hill Distillery

A larger-scale operation that added depth and perspective to the Bourbon Trail experience.  We night have picked up a fave for one of our dear friends that just turned 60 😉

📍 Day 3: Split Paths — Golf vs. Bardstown (High Energy on Both Sides)

⛳️ The Guys: Louisville Cardinal Golf Club

A beautiful course that delivered challenge, competition, and plenty of memorable shots.  A day where a friendly foursome turned competitive and came down to the final hole.  You know the kind…where every shot suddenly matters just a little more.

🛍️ The Girls: Bardstown Adventures (Not Your Average Day)

This was anything but slow-paced.

We headed into Bardstown and quickly found ourselves in the middle of one of the most fun, unexpected days of the trip.

👉 Chicken Cock (Circa 1856) was a highlight—
a revitalized brand that perfectly blends history with a modern experience.

And then… there was Barbie.

A mixologist with personality, presence, and serious skill—her Jumpin’ Julep (featured in Forbes) absolutely lived up to the hype.

She didn’t just make drinks—she created an experience.
👉 And yes… we learned: smoke the ice first, then pour the drink.

From there, we explored more of Bardstown—including stepping into history at Talbott’s Tavern, where Jesse James once stayed…

…and apparently left his mark by shooting holes in the wall (yes, really).

Between cocktails, history, shopping, and nonstop laughs—this day delivered.

🍽️ Dinner: Wheated

Back together again.

Artisanal pizza + an incredible bourbon selection = exactly what we needed to wrap up the day.

📍 Day 4: Distilleries + Big Energy Day

Back with KBB Tours for another full day of exploring. Proving the magic of the Bourbon Trail – no two stops are ever the same.

🥃 J. Mattingly Distillery

Engaging, energetic, and one of the most memorable tours.

🥃 Wild Turkey Distillery

Great storytelling, strong brand legacy, and a guide who blended humor with deep knowledge.

🥃 Buffalo Trace Distillery

A stunning, iconic property.

👉 Pro tip: Check to website for daily product availability and head to the gift shop early to get your hands on those rare finds

🍽️ Dinner: La Bodeguita de Mima

An incredible way to end the day.

High energy, bold flavors, and an atmosphere rooted in family, heritage, and Cuban culture.

📍 Day 5: Split Paths + Downtown Louisville

⛳️ The Guys: Heritage Hills

An early start on a  hidden gem – don’t let the clubhouse fool you.  The “snack shop” at the club was very impressive.  With Pappy on the line for the winners – It was a full-on  competition – and let’s just say, it came down to the wire.  On the 18th hole…From a nearly impossible lie…John pulled off an incredible shot to win what we’re officially calling: The Championship of the Bourbon Trail 2026 (title self-appointed…and well earned)

🌿 The Ladies:

  • Walk through Cherokee Park (designed by none other than Frederick Law Olmstead – yes, the same visionary behind Central Park)
  • Angel’s Envy + Blue Angels flyover ✈️
  • Downtown exploring

🌆 Evening: Louisville Bar Scene

  • Doc Crow’s (2,000+ bourbons!)
  • Troll Pub Under the Bridge
  • Hell or High Water (Top-2 speakeasy in the U.S.)

👉 Don’t miss the two-story library room
👉 Reservations recommended

🍽️ Dinner: Monk’s Road Boiler House

An incredible steakhouse experience.

Outstanding food, exceptional service…
👉 and yes, get the crab cakes.

And finally…a nightcap under the stars at Hotel Bourre Bonne – where sophistication meets Kentucky spirit.  And the views – the perfect way to cap off a day that we won’t forget soon.

📍 Day 6: Final Day — One Last Adventure

After saying goodbye to our new friends, we found ourselves with Joe and Jen on the final day with one big question:

👉 Can the guys play Valhalla… with a storm rolling in?

Answer: Yes. And it was worth it.

🥞Before splitting up, we all had breast at Big Bad Breakfast

Let’s just say that it absolutely lived up to its name!  Great food, great service and the perfect send-off before they day’s adventure.

⛳️ Valhalla Golf Club

The guys were off with big smiles and big expectations.  A bucket-list course that delivered everything they hoped for.

Memorable shots, incredible caddies – who were absolute pros, offering insight, humor and a few great stories along the way – and a perfect ending to the golf side of the trip.

(Also… yes, there may have been some gear purchased to “remember the day.” Shocking. 😏)

🛍️ The Ladies:

  • Antiquing
  • Unexpected Mrs. Roper event 😂
  • Castle & Key Distillery

🏰 Castle & Key Distillery

One of the most beautiful stops on the Bourbon Trail. It’s intentional, thoughtful and built around the idea that great spirits bring people together.

A restored historic property featuring:

  • Limestone castle
  • Keyhole springhouse
  • Stunning gardens

A perfect final moment to slow down and take it all in.

🍽️ Final Reunion:

Dinner, viewing the latest in prom fashion, and sharing stories from the day.

The kind of ending that makes you already start planning the next trip.

🔁 What We’ll Do Next Time

  • Make reservations at The Bar at Willett
  • Spend more time in downtown Louisville
  • Stay at the same VRBO (Wheated next door = bonus 🍕)
