There’s fishing…
And then there’s the kind of fishing story people think you’re exaggerating.
This was the second kind.
We booked our excursion with Mike’s Fishing & Tours — and from the moment we stepped onto the boat, the crew made us feel like we were in for a great day on the water.
Heading out into Banderas Bay early in the morning is an experience all by itself. The Puerto Vallarta coastline slowly disappears behind you while the Sierra Madre mountains rise in the distance. Coffee in hand, ocean breeze hitting your face, anticipation building…
And then suddenly…
Chaos.
Reels screaming.
Adrenaline pumping.
Everyone yelling directions nobody fully understands.
And somehow, in the middle of it all…
A sailfish.
One of the most beautiful fish we’ve ever seen in person.
Elegant. Powerful. Unreal.
Watching that fish break through the water was one of those travel moments that immediately gets locked into memory. The crew from Mike’s was incredible throughout the entire experience — knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely excited right alongside us.
But Puerto Vallarta fishing culture doesn’t stop with the catch.
Later on the ride back in, we enjoyed fresh Mahi and Tuna ceviche prepared from the day’s haul right there on the boat — and honestly, it may have been some of the freshest seafood we’ve ever eaten.
Ocean to plate.
Doesn’t get much better than that.
What we loved most about the experience was that it wasn’t just “going fishing.” It felt like a true Puerto Vallarta adventure — equal parts excitement, scenery, storytelling, and appreciation for the ocean that defines so much of life here.
Even if you’re not a serious fisherman, book the excursion. The scenery, marine life, and energy alone make it worth it.
